With the iPhone nearing its annual refresh cycle, Walmart has jumped the gun and put the current Apple smartphone offering in the discount corner to make space for the upcoming iPhone.


As a result, the Apple iPhone 4S and Apple iPhone 5 have both seen their prices slashed significantly. Walmart now sells the iPhone 5 for $129, down from $189, while the iPhone 4S is discounted from $89 to $39.

The deals are only available with new 2-year contracts with either AT&T, Spring or Verizon. T-Mobile isnt offered, as Walmart doesnt support the carrier. Other major brick and mortar retailer Best Buy is also reportedly planning to slash the price of both Apple smartphone devices by offering in-store credit.

The Apple iPhone 5S is expected to go on sale later this year. As a purported iPhone 5S live image showed, it is not going to be a completely redesigned product but more of a faster, more refined version of the current iPhone 5.

Official Office Mobile iPhone app lands in the UK App Store but iPad-friendly version is still a notable absentee


Microsoft has announced that its Office Mobile app is now available to download from the Apple App Store in the UK for the iPhone and is free to use for Office 365 subscribers.

Previously only available as a pre-installed application on Windows Phone handsets, iPhone users who can sign in with Microsoft Account details can now get access to Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel software to edit documents and draw up presentations on the way to work.

With cloud support courtesy of SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro, you’ll be able to access content whenever you are connected and continue right from the point where you last reviewed the document on your desktop.

Formatting and layout should be consistent when viewing, editing or adding comments while built-in sharing means when you are done adding those finishing touches, you can send work as an email attachment or upload it to SkyDrive.

Optimized for the smaller screen surroundings of the iPhone, the application can technically work with the iPad but has been specifically designed for the Apple smartphone to get the best experience.

The arrival of the Office Mobile iPhone app comes after Microsoft announced Office 365 Home Premium and Businesses services earlier this year and will go up against similar offerings that already exist on the App Store which include Apple’s own iWork and Quickoffice.

Microsoft has not revealed any details or hinted as to when we can expect to see a dedicated iPad version or whether we can expect an Android app anytime soon either.

Its seemingly impossible to go a week without a new smartphone announcement, with manufacturers falling all over themselves to announce the "next big thing."


Some may be tempted to write off yesterdays reveal of the Nokia Lumia 1020 as just another debut of yet another Windows Phone 8 device, albeit one with a humungous camera, but the Finnish firm is hoping consumers will find that it actually enhances the mobile phone experience.

When CEO Stephen Elop took the stage to put the focus on the bombastic 41MP Pureview camera fitted into the Lumia 1020s frame, he showed the world the Nokia is ready to evolve beyond the traditional idea of a smartphone.

In addition to attempting to blaze a new path in the cellphone sphere, Nokia believes its latest flagship will offer prospective users true control and confidence in capturing their lives at the press of a button.

Two camera apps, one focus

That the Lumia 1020 has a better camera than most point-and-shoots, and low-end DSLRs for that matter, shouldnt intimidate potential users.

For Nokia, one of the core concepts of its latest phone is putting confidence back in the hands of the amateur photographer.

According to the companys research, consumers will take 7-10 pictures with a camera just to make sure they got the right image.

As Nokias reps explained to us, with the Lumia 1020, the first picture you take will hopefully be the picture you keep. Granted, it make take the phone a little longer to save the 15MB image, but the aim is that its worth the wait.

The phones Pro Camera app should alleviate some of the unease and uncertainty users might have about getting the shot just right, as well.

Useful features like Reframe allow you to craft multiple images from just one massive 41MP shot, while more experienced photographers will still find all the ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed options they could hope for, allowing them the same level of customization they have with a full camera in a device decidedly smaller. The features arent inaccessible to the non-photogs among us, either.

The Smart Camera app provides a range of "been there, done that" options at a slightly lower resolution, but is still capable of offering more creative ways to personalize your pictures.

Though you wont be able to take 41MP images with Smart Camera on, youll have much more freedom and flexibility for action shots and editing within Nokias built-in Creative Studio.

Technically, theres a third camera app in the default Windows 8 camera, but its not fine-tuned for the new Pureview lens like the other two Nokia-developed apps.

It will still take pictures just like youd expect, but it doesnt offer any of the bonus features found in either Smart Camera or Pro Camera.

Regardless of which app you use, all photos are taken with the new stabilization, multi-layered lens, and flash, which should help give even novices a chance at capturing the elusive "perfect" image.

The forest for the trees

Unless youve got an actual photographer in your family, most of your photo albums are probably full of either close-ups or wide-angle shots.

Your smartphone camera album is probably even worse, as most digital zooms end up looking awful and distorted.

Weve seen camera features like action shots, multi-shots, face-swapping, and the ability to wipe moving objects before, but that doesnt make them any less relevant for a phone like the Lumia 1020.

By including a wealth of options like those above, Nokia has effectively eliminated the hoping and praying typically associated with trying to get just the right shot.

In theory, users will be able to take solace that no matter what, theyre going to get the shot they wanted... with a little help from Nokias software.

Of course, theres something to be said for the lens and flash coming with the Lumia 1020 as well, as those components will do a lot of the heavy lifting in making sure photographs turn out the way you intended.

Intelligent design

The Xenon flash isnt as harsh as an LED flash, but it is brighter and faster, which means images taken in low-light will come out stronger, even if people are moving.

Outside of turning the flash on or off, thats not something youll ever have to manage; thats just the way the phone is built.

Additionally, the five lenses (one glass, four plastic) compacted together to create the Pureview design have stabilization measures built-in to ensure they all move in unison.

By ensuring the lenses will never be out of sync, you have a markedly lower chance of shaky cam happening with stills or with video.

Nokia has issued a media invite for an event on July 11th with all signs pointing to the launch of its long-awaited 41-megapixel camera phone, codenamed EOS.

The handset has been leaked numerous times in recent weeks suggesting that an official launch is imminent and it now looks like Nokia will pull the trigger on the device in exactly four weeks at the event in New York City.

Beyond the protruding camera module, leaked snaps have suggested that the handset will boast a similar design to that of well-received handsets like the Lumia 925.

Rumours have also suggested itll have a 1290 x 768p resolution OLED screen alongside 32GB of storage to hold all of those high resolution snaps. It has also been suggested that the device will capture images at separate resolutions in order to facilitate easier social sharing.

Many Nokia fans have been waiting for the company to launch a high-spec camera phone running the Windows Phone OS since the PureView 808 device appeared over a year ago.

That handset arrived touting the ancient Symbian operating system, but impressed most observers with its giant sensor and excellent image quality.

When the device does arrive itll be in direct competition with the newly-announced Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, which brings a 10x optical zoom into play.

Apple has confirmed that it will release licensed iOS 7 game controllers via Logitech and Moga, revealing its plans during a WWDC session.


The Curpertino company has held a 45-minute long WWDC session dedicated to its upcoming iOS 7 game controllers, showcasing hardware mock-ups and outlining best practice guidelines.

Entitled “Integrating with Game Controllers”, Apple’s WWDC session revealed how serious the company is about producing licensed game controllers for its new iOS 7 operating system and confirmed they will be made by Logitech and Moga.

Apple speakers during the session offered a comprehensive guide helping developers to code their games for the iOS 7 controllers.

Two iOS 7 game controller concepts were outlined earlier this week, but Apple actually provided hardware example designs during the WWDC session. The first is a called a the “form-fitting extended gamepad” that wraps around an iPhone or iPod Touch that features the standard array of console gamepad buttons, D-pad, shoulder buttons and dual analog sticks.

The second option is the “standalone extended gamepad” that is not connected to the device in any way and could perhaps be used for iPad iOS 7 gaming. It has the same button layout as the “form-fitting” option but includes player indicator LEDs, meaning the device could support multiplayer gaming, akin to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Handily, both controller options feature a pause button for quick access to the start menu of iOS games.

Apple also outlined that both iOS 7 controller models will have pressure-sensitive, analogue sticks without a dead zone, non-drifting D-pads and fast button response times.

An iOS 7 release date has been scheduled for some time this autumn, compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 devices along with iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad mini. The 5th-generation iPod Touch will also be compatible with the new operating system.

Device specifications and accompanying APIs for the iOS 7 game controllers will be ready in time for the iOS 7 release later this year.

Step 11: In Recovery Mode, go to "install zip from sdcard" option and select "choose zip from sdcard". Finally, navigate to the GT-I9195-RootKit-v1.zip file that you copied earlier and confirm the installation.

EE has launched the first Pay As You Go 4GEE Mobile Broadband tariffs, allowing simplified super fast broadband payments.


Super fast mobile 4G broadband can now be accessed on a PAYG basis with the new tablet and smartphone plans from EE.

“PAYG 4GEE Mobile Broadband means you can get superfast 4GEE internet access on your tablet or laptop whenever you like - and only pay as you use it", explains EE in a statement.

A PAYG 4G SIM can be purchased for £15 with 2GB of data pre-loaded for 30 days of use.

“A great way to enjoy superfast 4GEE on your tablet or laptop is with a Mobile Wi-FI device - like the Alcatel Y800 which comes pre-loaded with 3GB worth of data. It’s like being surrounded by your own travelling ‘bubble of 4G’.”

The Alcatel L800 UB dongle is priced at £50 with that 2GB of data and will last for 30 days. When purchased, the user can also sign up for an additional 6GB of data for the same price at a 2GB bundle.

The PAYG Mobile Wi-Fi device, the Alcatel Y800 Mobile, also comes with 2GB of data for a £70 one-off fee. As with the dongle, a 6GB data bundle can be purchased for the 2GB bundle price.

Users can top up by the day or the month. It’s £3 per day for an additional 500MB of data. Extra monthly allowances cost £15 for 2GB, £20 for 4GB and £30 for 10GB of data.

When the device is connected successfully, the ID: COM box will turn blue with the COM port number. Additionally, the successful connected will be indicated by a message saying Added.

Note: If the Added message does not appear, then try re-install USB drivers or changing the port on the computer.

Step 7: Choose the following files in Odin from extracted P3100XXDMG6 firmware folder by using respective checkboxes:
Step 8: In Odin, enable Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes. Also, ensure the Re-Partition checkbox is chosen only if a .pit file was chosen in the previous step.
Step 9: Verify everything suggested in Step 7 and Step 8 is done correctly. Then hit the START button to begin the installation process.
Step 10: Once the installation process is completed, your phone will restart and soon you will see a PASS message with green background in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. You can now unplug the USB cable to disconnect your device from computer.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3100 should be now updated with official Android 4.2.2 XXDMG6 Jelly Bean. Head over to Settings >> About Phone to verify the software version running on the device.

Note: If Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3100 stuck at booting animation after Step 10 then go to recovery mode (press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons together) and perform Wipe data/Factory Reset and Wipe Cache Partition task before selecting reboot system now function. In recovery mode use Volume keys to navigate between options and Power key to select the option. Please note, performing wiping task will erase your device internal memory data and not external SD card data.

Microsoft-owned VoIP app Skype has updated its wares for iOS users, allowing them to send unlimited free video messages to fellow users.


The newly-tuned app lifts restrictions on video clips, which had previously limited users to just 20 free videos a month unless they upgraded to the $4.99 Skype Premium subscription.

The update comes just over a week after Skype announced it would be making video messages completely free on all platforms.

In a blog post at the time the company said: "Video messaging is now available to all Skype users. You can send and receive as many video messages as you want – completely free of charge. Video messages can be received and viewed on any platform or device running Skype."

The functionality allows users to send video messages up to three minutes in length from Skypes smartphone, tablets and Windows and Mac apps.

Its proved popular for those wishing to send personal video messages quickly and easily, while its also a good alternative if users are unable to make contact when attempting to make a live voice and video call.

As well as some general fixes and improvements, the app also improves video and audio call stability and brings more reliable photo sharing.

Earlier this month the company had rolled out the video message feature, which first appeared for iOS, Android and Mac users in February, to BlackBerry, Windows 8 and Windows desktop users.

Strangely, considering Microsoft owns the company, the feature is yet to hit Windows Phone.
